Wanda Dunlap Jordan, beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away at her home in Houston, TX on September 8, 2023. She was born on December 17, 1936, in Laurel, Mississippi to the late Thomas and Lela Woods Dunlap.
Wanda's faith in Jesus Christ was instilled at an early age. She became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Laurel and later attended Willow Meadows United Methodist Church in Houston. Wanda's spiritual journey guided her throughout her life and helped her find solace and strength.
Education played a significant role in Wanda's life. She attended Sandy Gavin School where her mother served as a schoolteacher. Wanda's dedication to her studies led her to become the valedictorian of Oak Park Vocational High School's class of 1954. Her academic achievements opened doors for her, and she went on to attend Dillard University in New Orleans.
During her junior year at Dillard University, Wanda was accepted into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Beta Gamma Chapter. Her exceptional academic performance earned her an outstanding Scholarly Achievement Scholarship from the National Methodist Church. Wanda showcased her determination by obtaining a bachelor's degree in nursing from Dillard University.
Wanda's thirst for knowledge pushed her further as she pursued a master's degree in nursing from Boston University. Her dedication to learning and passion for healthcare led the Dillard University Alumni Association to honor Wanda for her contributions to the field of health in 1977.
After completing her education, Wanda embarked on a successful career as an instructor in nursing at various institutions including Alvin Junior College, Prairie View A&M University, and Dillard University. In 2001, after 29 years of dedicated service, she retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Outside of work, Wanda seized every opportunity to travel and explore new horizons. Her adventures took her across the globe, where she visited captivating sites in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Alaska, and many more. Wanda's zest for life and her curiosity allowed her to embrace different cultures and create treasured memories.
Wanda's kindness extended beyond her professional and personal life. She was known for her generous spirit as she contributed to various organizations over the years. Her loyal support touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the community.
Wanda was a loving mother and grandmother. She leaves behind cherished memories with her son Charles Jordan (Tammy), stepsons Curtis Hosey (Felicia), Eric Jordan, and Nicholas Jordan, as well as her grandchildren La Charles Jordan, Matthew Jordan, Myia Hosey, Jordan Hosey, and great-grandchildren Layla Jordan, Josiah Thomas, and Sage Hosey. Wanda also leaves behind a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services to honor Wanda Dunlap Jordan's incredible life will be held on September 16, 2023 at Elite Life Celebration in Houston, TX. A Memorial Gathering will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Another service will be held on September 23, 2023 at Brown Mortuary in Laurel, MS. The Celebration of Life will begin at 1:00 PM.
Wanda Dunlap Jordan will forever be remembered as a remarkable woman whose passion for education and healthcare touched countless lives. Her legacy will continue to inspire others to pursue their dreams with determination and compassion. In this time of mourning, let us celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and find solace in the precious memories she has left behind. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
