James Lewis Martin, a man of commanding presence and a heart overflowing with love and generosity, bid farewell to this world on February 19, 2024, at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on January 30, 1942, in Terry, Mississippi, to the late Charlie Martin and the late Luezetta McDonald Martin, James was the second oldest of five lively brothers.
Throughout his life, James embodied strength and kindness in equal measure. He carried with him a deep passion for history, particularly his experiences in the civil rights era. An aficionado of western movies and a connoisseur of good food, James found joy in simple pleasures.
James was a pillar in the Terry community—a cherished father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. His contributions to those around him were immeasurable.
In addition to his immediate family members who mourn his loss deeply, James is survived by five children: Teresa Martin of Terry, Mississippi; Lenora Jones-Tillman of Terry, Mississippi; Diana Hart-Virgil (David) of Dothan, Alabama; Anthony M. Jones (Shanta) of Irvine, California; and Jason Martin of Terry, Mississippi. His special son whom he endearingly called "Mule Head," Barry Ransom (Bertha) of Terry, Mississippi also grieves his passing.
Among those who cherish James's memory are two sisters-in-law Nora Martin of Crystal Springs, Mississippi and Ethel Martin of Terry, Mississippi; eight grandchildren: David K. Bozeman; Brooklynn Virgil; Malik Jones; Destin Johnson; Shaquail Jones; ShaDedra Cottrell; Anthony M. Jones Jr.; and Marcus D. Cottrell; as well as a multitude of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives he touched with his kindness.
As we gather to honor James Lewis Martin's legacy at Heritage Funeral Services in Terry followed by a Celebration of Life at Terry Mission Baptist Church in the coming days ahead—may we remember him not only for his stature and firmness but also for the boundless love and generosity that defined his remarkable life journey. In our hearts forevermore rests the memory of a man whose impact on those he loved will endure through the ages.
