Hattie Thigpen Summers, a beloved school teacher and bus driver for the Copiah County School System for over four decades, has passed away at the age of 77. She will be remembered as a devoted educator who had an immense love for children.


Born on June 6, 1946, in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, Hattie was raised in a nurturing environment that instilled in her values of compassion and kindness. These qualities remained with her throughout her life, making her a beloved figure within her community.


Hattie's passion for teaching led her to graduate from Holtzclaw Negro High School in 1964. She furthered her education at Jackson State University and proudly graduated in 1968. Armed with knowledge and a deep desire to make a difference, Hattie embarked on her teaching career.


For an impressive 41 years, Hattie dedicated herself to shaping young minds within the Copiah County School System. Her commitment extended beyond the classroom as she also served as a bus driver for 43 years. Hattie's joy came from watching her students grow and succeed both academically and personally.


Outside of work, Hattie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her adoring husband Richard Summers stood by her side throughout their journey together. Together they raised three wonderful children: Frank (Luci) Thigpen, Michael (Ruthie) Summers, and Wanda (Dewayne) Williams. Hattie's pride radiated when she spoke about her fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


Hattie's kind heart touched many lives throughout the years. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her brother James Thigpen, six sisters-in-law, seven brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.


Despite the world's loss, it's comforting to remember the lasting impact Hattie had on countless individuals. She will forever be cherished for her warm smile, unwavering love, and nurturing spirit.


Services celebrating Hattie's remarkable life will be held on February 2-3, 2024. The visitation will take place on February 2 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Services, LLC located at 421 West Cunningham Ave., Terry, MS 39170. On February 3, a Celebration of Life will be held at Salem M.B Church located at 20650 Midway Rd, Terry, MS 39170. The service will begin at 11:00 AM.


In this time of grief, let us remember the beautiful soul that Hattie Thigpen Summers possessed. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire generations to come. May she rest in eternal peace.
